日本とはどういう国なのか、世界における位置づけはあるのだろうか。いろいろと考えさせられる新年ではある。アメリカ、イギリス、など自国主義が求められる時代へと変革が進む今、”島国日本の文化” にも何か世界が学ぶものがあるのではないだろうか。
アメリカ人に国籍を変えた、旧友、中村修二さん（現カリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校教授）が、いつも、講演などで ”日本はアメリカ合衆国の51番目の州になるか、それとも、中国の東の都（トンキン）になるか、それとも、日本国という独立国として存在するか、どれが良いと思うか？” という ”冗談” を言って楽しませてくれたことを今でも思い出します。私は、京都のある大学の大学院での講義で、いつもこの中村修二先生の ”言葉” を大学院の学生に言ってその感想を求めます。レポート課題にもします。毎年、その答えを聞くのが楽しみです。”一体、日本とはどういう国なのか” 20歳を超える学生さんたちの意見は年々変化してきているように思えます。トランプ・アメリカ、ブレグジット・イギリス等の自国主義の風潮が多少影響を及ぼし始めていることも否め…ないような気もします。
この Japan Times の記事、”世界は日本の歴史から何を学ぶのか ” は、的確な指摘があるように思えます。
カルロス・ゴーン裁判では 仕事や倫理などに関する文化の違いが議論されることになるのでは？
今こそ視野を広め、深く、学んでいきたいと思います。
What the world can learn from Japan
＝＝Western business schools teach students to explore, to challenge, to do more and to expand business. Japanese, on the other hand, define success more in terms of collective survival. Social harmony surpasses growth as the primary objective. By that measure, Japan may be the most successful country on the planet.
Ian Buruma, a historian, recently wrote, “Contemporary Japan may have its flaws, but it is now much more egalitarian than the United States, India or many countries in Europe.” Japan, he said, remains “a country of, by, and for the middle class” where “self-worth is defined less by individual fame or wealth than by having a place in a collective enterprise, and doing the job one is assigned as well as one can.”＝＝
