EE BACKGROUND~ Background Story of Entrepreneur Engineering ~

1. Real-World Experience at Panasonic for over 37 Years

①Development and Commercialization of New Technologies in the Semiconductor Field

Founder of Panasonic, Mr. Matsushita Konosuke, was instrumental in the R&D of semiconductor devices that later became the core of digital consumer electronics. For example, the semiconductor technology was applied in various consumer devices, such as DVDs, CDs, and mobile phones. As a result, it had over 50 billion yen in sales annually.

Awards Received by Technical Research Group

  • Emmy Award ~ The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences ~ (1992): Development of CCD for HDTV.
  • Nippon Keizai Shimbun Award (1994): Development of GaAs IC’s for Digital Mobile Phones.
  • Ohkochi Award (1996): Development of Ferroelectric MMIC’s.
  • Ohkochi Award (1997): Development of Integrated Holographic

②Development and Commercialization of New Technologies in the Field of Display and Lighting

Through the continued promotion of R&D related to the plasma display technology, Panasonic became a world leader. By promoting strategic initiatives such as a joint development project with NHK, and a few acquisitions, it led to annual sales of over several hundreds of billions of yen. With the success of the plasma display, the concept of “entrepreneurial engineering,” was born.

Awards Received by Technical Research Group

  • Broadcast Culture Fund Award (1998): Development of the HDTV Full Color Plasma Display.
  • Ministry of International Trade and Industry Prize (1993): Standardization of the Measurement System.
  • SID Special Achievement Award (1994): Development of High-Resolution CRT Technology.
  • SID Achievement Award (1997): Development of Flat CRT Technology.

③Proposal and Practice of the Concept of Japan-US Complementary Collaboration

From many years of experience managing strategic and efficient R&D at Panasonic, Mr. Kano put into practice a new concept for Japan-US complementary collaboration. By complementing the software oriented power of the United States with Japan’s hardware oriented power, the pair promoted a philosophy of joint prosperity.
